i live in northern alberta and between that and the changing climate the weather is inherently unstable at this season… i realized this year that the coming and going of the birds and the colour of the jackrabbits is a more reliable marker of time and cycle than the snow on the ground or the air temperature

Thank you for sharing what resonated and for being here, remembering to feast our more than human kin, seen and unseen.

I chose bear as my guide when I was three, somehow knowing in my bones, well before my grandmother told me, that the bear is a creature of great significance in Latvia , the land of my foremothers. There are only fifty bears left in that country , their population reduced by wars and by increased human incursions into forests. I love your telling of their messages, scratched into the wood of the fence.

So glad the seeds from relatives are coming home from that dusty museum shelf. Bear songlines keep singing, glad to see the fence marked by their coming and going. Lots of composting in this earth, what a beautiful breakdown for reincarnation of self and place. Blacktail deer has taught so much about self care and gentle loving here. Also big leaf maple, as she lays down across the creek this year, giving cover to salmon, trout, and cool, clear waters. The current picks up my grief, dilutes in the moment, problems into ripples, eddies, over smooth rock faces of many joyous voices all gurgling laughter for our hearts to speak louder.

Thank you so much for sharing this Rowen. I love the Bear signpost photo! Here we have a chipmunk who wants to live under our house. He's a common topic of discussion with my sweetheart. I reminded him that the chipmunk's great-great-great etc. Grandparents were here before our house was, which he conceded to be true.

You asked who are more than human teachers are. Lately it's Marty our dog. He's a sensitive fellow. Whenever I start discussing the "news" with my sweetheart he senses my agitated system more than I do and gets anxious. So I must calm myself for his sake. Thank you Marty for snapping me out of the toxic lull. I'll watch our birds friends today to see what they have to share. Right now the cardinals are starting to set up some invisible lines around the yard as they prepare to build nests. Those lines will disappear once their babies are safely grown.
